Niue
No where like Niue
Niue is a Pacific Island paradise like no other, one of the smallest countries, and one of the largest raised coral atolls on earth.
It’s only a 3.5hr flight from Auckland and the currency is NZ$. Best to always have some cash as most place don’t have EFTPOS and there is only one ATM on the island which is inside the bank, so only accessible when the bank is open.
There is only one resort, Scenic Matavai Resort, which is set on a cliff with stunning views of the ocean. Other accommodation options are self-catering. There is a small supermarket and plenty of cafes/restaurants catering to all tastes. Also you can take fresh food/drink with you from New Zealand.
All around the island are small tracks leading from the road down to amazing snorkelling spots in clear, sparkling water. Most of the tracks are fairly basic so care is required and I strongly recommend taking reef shoes (and of course snorkelling gear).
Whale migration is from July to October and there are telescopes strategically placed at viewing points around Niue. Humpback whales shelter in the waters to nurse their young and can often be seen from shore with the naked eye.
The people of Niue are warm and friendly and trusting. There is no crime and the last time the tiny jail was used was years ago and that was to sober up someone who had overindulged. We hired a car and were told that one of the conditions of hire was that we NEVER took the key out of the ignition. They only had one key and no locksmith on the island. We could leave the car in the main street unlocked and with windows open and bags on the seat and wander off for an hour or two knowing that everything would be there when we returned.
Worth a visit!
